  • Botanic Australis Gin

    , ,

Botanic Australis Gin stands out from any other ordinary gin because the structured blend of 14 Australian Native botanics make our gin far superior to any other dry styled gin.

Tasting note (theginqueen.com): You know I am passionate about Aussie gins (I’ve even created a lovely event for you to try some) so when I came across Botanic Australis Gin at Top Shelf Boutique Drinks Festival today (expect a round-up later) I couldn’t wait to write about it! It was definitely my ‘Gin of the day’. Where to start? It’s craft-distilled in North Queensland at the Mt. Uncle Distillery (there is a Mt. Aunty too!), contains no fewer than 14 native botanicals, (including three types of myrtle, finger limes and lilly pilly), and is both distinctive and delicious. The gentleman serving me described it as “very herbaceous”. And so it is. A hint of juniper, a mouthful of warmth and then the botanicals play a fandango (look it up) in your mouth. Herb, grass, mint and citrus flavours, all at once. I also detected ginger and pepper after notes too. It was love at first taste and I swiftly purchased a bottle. I am now saving for my airfare to Queensland where I will kiss the still that produced it.

  • Brookies Byron Dry Gin

    , ,

Brookies Byron Dry Gin is made in a custom hand-made copper pot-still in the heart of the Brook’s family macadamia farm in the Byron Bay hinterland. What sets the gin apart is that it showcases Australian native botanicals in a way that hasn’t been done before. This is achieved through a unique distillation method and the use of native botanicals from the rainforest. The Brook’s family have replanted over 40,000 rainforest trees for regeneration over the past 30 years.

    Tasting Notes:

The spirit opens on a captivating combination of Citrus notes, led by Aniseed and Cinnamon Myrtle in harmony with a lively drift of Finger and Blood Limes. This awakens and stimulates the olfactory system which rejoices in the purity of their aromas. But be patient, this is just the start of an aromatic odyssey. Juniper berries pop like champagne bubbles lifting the senses to a place they have never been. With a little time and aeration Juniper and Coriander enter the scene bringing the depth and distinction that one expects from a high quality Gin. As the spirit evolves further, the taste receptors are going crazy with anticipation, but they will have to wait as White Aspen and Riberry join the party. Add a little Lily Pilly and Dorrigo Pepper leaf and now your getting there. It’s an incredible beguiling ground breaking aromatic exploration.”

  • Brookies Byron Slow Gin

    , ,

Brookies Byron Slow Gin is a limited edition release from Cape Byron Distillery.

A traditional style of ‘sloe gin’ is made from sloe berries. The new Brookie’s drop takes a subtle shift away from this style and namesake by using Davidson plums instead, which are native to the Byron Bay and northern rivers region. From its distillery in the Byron Bay hinterland, the creation of the Brookies Byron Slow Gin is a long process – there is a six-month maturation period from when the plums are picked and the skins are torn. After that, it’s blended with Mount Warning spring water, then balanced with sugar (Davidson plums are quite tart), and the result is an impressive gin with rich, aged characteristics.

Tasting Notes: The bright and deep colour achieved is completely natural from the plums. The taste is aged and, in a very subtle way, has similarities to port, with notes of watermelon and rose. The Slow Gin is refreshing in style and form, and is best served neat or with an sliver of orange peel.

  • Four Pillars Australian Christmas Gin

    , ,

To make the limited edition Four Pillars Australian Christmas Gin, Four Pillars Master Distiller, Cam, first distills some Christmas puddings (made to his mother Wilma’s 1968 recipe) with juniper, cinnamon, star anise, coriander and angelica over the top.

Cam also ages gin in a couple of 125-year-old ex-William Grant scotch whisky barrels that had previously stored Rutherglen Muscat for 80 years. He then blends this with the Christmas Pudding gin, and to finish he adds a slight tweak of Rutherglen Classic Muscat to round out the palate. This year Cam also added a touch of our own muscat that has been sitting in barrels which previously aged Pedro Ximenez. So we get even more depth, richness and complexity.

More than ever, it smells like gin and tastes like Christmas. Sip it neat (it’s dangerously drinkable), make a Christmas Martinez, pour over your pudding or check out these other drinking suggestions.

  • Four Pillars Bloody Shiraz Gin

    , ,

One day Four Pillars distiller Cam thought, what would happen when you combine Four Pillars Gin with some of the best Shiraz grapes in Australia?

Using the incredible calibre of cool climate fruit available to us in the Yarra Valley, Four Pillars Distillery steeped their first Yarra Valley Shiraz grapes in 2015 in high proof Rare Dry Gin for eight weeks. After eight weeks the fruit was pressed before blending with more Rare Dry Gin. The resulting gin was a little bit of a success, and so in 2017 they’re now onto our third (and largest) vintage release.

This year was cooler, giving us a longer ripening time. That means we’re seeing a more vibrant ruby colour in the 2017 release, with true Yarra Valley shiraz characters – earthiness, complexity and subtle white pepper spice. But still with that balanced sweetness of the previous releases. Aromatically is has fresh pine needles, citrus and spice, and a clear peppery, dense raspberry character. The palate is lovely and sweet with a long juniper and spice character on the finish.

  • Four Pillars Navy Strength Gin

    , ,

Four Pillars Navy Strength Gin is made with fresh ‘Judy’s Everbearing’ finger limes, along with our beautiful organic oranges. The finger limes highlight the Asian spices like coriander and star anise, and are complemented by the addition of fresh ginger. Finally, fresh turmeric adds a fresh but earthy quality, not unlike dill, and weight to the palate.

The resulting gin has lifted aromatics of lime curd, pine needles, and fragrant spices with a vanilla character which pulls the spices together. The palate is intense – sweet and juicy – but it is still very clean.

In its most recent competitive outing, Four Pillars Navy Strength Gin was awarded Master status at the Global Gin Masters 2015.

  • Ink Dry Gin

    , ,

Ink Dry Gin is Australia’s first luxury premium gin, hand-crafted and pot distilled in small batches with organic botanicals in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales.

Ink Dry Gin is a premium dry gin made with 14 botanicals that include a mix of traditional and Australian natives, with locally grown lemon myrtle next to juniper berries at the top of the flavour profile. A suite of organic ingredients including coriander, Tasmanian pepper berries, freshly sun dried orange peel, cardamom, cinnamon, elderflower, and oris, angelica and licorice roots playing supporting roles adding balance, aroma, fragrance and spice.

Apart from its distinctive taste, an innovative additional step in the gin making process sets Ink Gin apart from all other gins. After distillation, we organically infuse the gin for 24 hours with butterfly pea flower petals, a flower that has long been used in herbal infusions and Asian cuisine. The natural floral ink gives Ink Gin its beautiful and luxurious royal blue to deep purple colour, with the colour varying depending on the angle and intensity of light.

  • Lark Forty Spotted Rare Tasmanian Gin

Lark Forty Spotted Rare Tasmanian Gin is named after the Forty-spotted Pardalote, Tasmania’s rarest bird. Produced at the Lark Distillery, this gin matches traditional gin botanicals with a rare Tasmanian native spice to create a refined and elegant gin that is unlike any other. Forty Spotted is hand distilled in small copper pot stills. Lark’s favour the steeping method of gin production and use the traditional botanicals of juniper berry, coriander and lemon peel to create a traditional London Dry style, but incorporate something a little bit special to give our gin its unique finish.

    Tasting Notes
Taste: Rose petals and spicy juniper combined with a dry, clean and fresh spirit. Excitingly complex. A spirit to even enjoy on its own. Finish: Lemon peel dryness, warming to a slightly sweet lingering note of complementary herbs and spices.

  • Stone Pine Dry Gin

    , ,

Stone Pine Dry Gin is an award winning Dry Gin pot distilled in small batches, gently infusing a proprietary blend of native and traditional botanicals to create a vibrant citrus-driven gin. The native flavours of Pink Finger Lime and Lemon Myrtle add a modern Australian twist to the London Dry style.

Tasting note (theginqueen.com): Stone Pine has fast become one of my favourite Aussie gins. Pot-distilled in small batches, Stone Pine Gin is firmly rooted in the London Dry style. Unlike many distillers, who readily share information on the botanicals used, the ingredients in Stone Pine Gin are a closely guarded secret. Although I have managed to find out from Ian Glen, the distiller, that the citrus notes of the gin are derived from the distillation of native finger limes. If you haven’t tried these delicious fruits, you’ve missed out. Often described as “citrus caviar”, they are being cultivated commercially and are becoming a key ingredient in many restaurants and bars. On first tasting Stone Pine Gin, citrus is the initial flavour with the sweetness of the limes very noticeable . It then develops into a warmer flavour of increasing intensity and finishes with a slight spiciness. I love it in a martini, either dirty or as it’s served here with a twist.
