Black Tot Last Consignment Royal Navy Rum

, , ,

For the first time in over 40 years, the last remaining stocks of the original Royal Naval rum tot have been bottled as Black Tot Last Consignment Royal Navy Rum. In its rich complex depths swirl tales of privateers and admirals, coopers, soft-hearted mutineers and parliamentarians. It is a piece of liquid naval history with a story dating back to 1655.

Black Tot Last Consignment Royal Navy Rum celebrates the end of a long tradition of rum in the Royal Navy and is named to commemorate the events of July 31st 1970 – Black Tot Day. On this day a 315 year old Royal Naval tradition ended at precisely 6 bells in the forenoon watch when the last rum ration was issued aboard ships of the Royal navy – a day to be forever remembered as Black Tot Day. A very sad day for some indeed!

Black Tot Last consignment is a truly remarkable and complex rum – a marriage of original British Colonial pot-still rums.

Once gone, it can never be repeated!

Tasting notes: Pours a deep copper/mahogany colour with some minor sediment evident. Perfumed aromatics exude layers of molasses, brown sugar, liquorice all sorts and new leather. Entry is semi sweet and soft, building with exceptional concentration. Mid palate is off dry with a momentary burst of date and raisin, becoming dry, spicy and fruit cake like. Stunning length as the flavours repeat in waves. Finish is progressively drier as delicate, powdery tannins enter. Impeccable balance. Concludes super fine and dry with notes of charry oak, sarsaparilla and cigar box. The persistence of flavour is nothing short of remarkable as the aftertaste reverberates in the mouth for ten minutes plus. An exhilarating rum experience.

Black Tot Last Consignment Royal Navy Rum is a unique rum that represents the culmination of 315 years of Royal Naval rum tradition.

Black Tot Last Consignment is a piece of liquid history. It was bottled from antique stone flagons containing the last stocks of Royal Navy Rum which laid untouched for over four decades. The naval blend of rums such as this one had continually evolved for over 100 years, with much of it coming from distilleries long since lost.

After 239 years of tradition, the last rum ration was issued aboard ships of the British Royal Navy on the 31st July 1970 – a day forever known as Black Tot Day. On this day the Royal Naval tradition ended at precisely 6 bells in the forenoon watch when the last rum ration was issued aboard ships of the Royal navy – a day to be forever remembered as Black Tot Day. A very sad day for some indeed!

For many years after this, sealed away in those antique stone flagons, the rum we now call Black Tot Last Consignment was drawn upon only for use in state occasions and royal weddings. Remarkably, after all these years, Black Tot Last Consignment Royal Navy Rum is still 54.3% (95° proof), almost exactly the original Navy issuing strength. This is a historical blend that can never be recreated.
