Isautier 16 Year Old Rhum Agricole

, , ,

Located in Saint-Pierre, in the south of Reunion Island, Isautier has been a family-run distillery for seven generations, with more than 176 years of history and tradition. It is the oldest rum distillery and the oldest company on Reunion Island.

The family has been deeply involved in the history of the island. Back in the 1860’s, Isautier continued to develop, particularly in export markets, and received numerous awards for the quality of their rums.

It is one of the few distilleries in the world to offer both old agricole and traditional aged rums of the highest quality.

The property has currently 500 hectares of land and 300 for sugar cane. The rich volcanic soil with multiple minerals, and the terroirs, influenced by trade winds, are behind the most productive varities of cane in Reunion.

Tasting notes:

The nose is luscious and smooth. Dried fruits with exotic notes, spices (ginger, cinnamon) and citrus peel. The palate is powerful and crisp. Liquorice, salted caramel butter, geranium and juniper berries. The finish is long and delicious with beeswax, orange zest, dark chocolate, cloves and camphor notes.

In collaboration with Cyril Isautier, La Maison & Velier had the opportunity to choose two old casks of exceptional rums: a traditional rum and an agricole rum, both distilled in 2004 and then matured, first for one year in new barrels and then 15 years in red barrels (When a barrel is called ‘RED’ – reddish colour of aged wood, it means it has reached the perfect stage of maturation for both the wood and the spirit, allowing for an ideally balanced exchange between the two).

These two Isautier rums are perfectly representative of the unique know-how, style and historical traditiona of the House.

The Agricole Rum ‘Hors d’ Age’ has been barreled in May 2005 and was aged 16 years, until November 2021. It was the last cask of the lot #16/17, the oldest Agricole rum in the Isautier cellar. This single cask yielded 536 bottles at 65%.
