Michters 20 Year Single Barrel Bourbon is a very rare and highly sought-after cask strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon.

While Michter’s regularly sample all their barrels to see how their whiskey is aging, they pay even extra special attention to their barrels once they are over 17 years old. At Michter’s they consider 17 to 20 years the “Fork In The Road Point” when certain barrels of whiskey can achieve an extraordinary level of quality. It is these particular barrels that our Master Distiller Dan McKee personally selects for our very limited bottling of Michter’s 20 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon.

It is made from the highest quality American corn and aged for 20 years in a hand selected charred white oak barrel until it meets the Michter’s standard. It is further mellowed by the Michter’s signature filtration method.

This 20 year old is the 2019 release, presented in an elegant tall bottle with cork and wax seal was released from barrel No. #L19H1439. Only 440 bottles of this were released, this is bottle #114.

Tasting Notes: It’s an elegant bourbon with lots of depth and cascading flavors,” said Michter’s President Joseph J. Magliocco. Official tasting notes from the brand tell us to expect “intense notes of black cherry, rich molasses, honeysuckle, roasted pecans, [and] toasted charred oak.

Michters 20 Year Single Barrel Bourbon is carefully crafted by Michter’s Distillery. Originally known as Shenk’s and later as Bomberger’s, the whiskey company which ultimately became known as Michter’s was founded by John Shenk, a Swiss Mennonite farmer, in Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania in 1753. In its earliest days, Shenk’s produced whiskey from rye grain, a favorite local crop in the Pennsylvania Blue Mountain Valley where the distillery was located.

According to Pennsylvania historical lore, this particular rye whiskey was so valued that when the Revolutionary War broke out, General George Washington visited the distillery and purchased whiskey to fortify his men as they hunkered down in their camp through the long, brutal winter at Valley Forge. Over 200 years later the Michter’s Pennsylvania management would say Michter’s  was  “the whiskey that warmed the American Revolution.”

In the mid-1800s, Pennsylvania Dutchman Abraham Bomberger purchased the distillery from the Shenk family, and the distillery became known for many decades as Bomberger’s.

Michters 20 Year Single Barrel Bourbon is part of a very limited edition range that reflect the exceptional results of uncompromising craftsmanship and Kentucky’s unrivaled climate for aging outstanding whiskey. Michter’s Master Distiller Dan McKee and Michter’s Master of Maturation, Andrea Wilson have approved another release of their sought-after 20 year old Kentucky Straight Bourbon.
