Santiago de Cuba Extra Anejo 25 Year Old Bottling is a very special vintage bottling of the 25 Year from Santiago de Cuba – one of the oldest in the range and very special indeed. It was introduced in 2005 to honour the 290th Anniversary of the Cuban city with the same name. This first release vintage bottling has long been replaced with a modern round version.
As with all extra aged expressions of Santiago de Cuba rum, this is a magical blend of the sweetness of sugarcane molasses and the subtle touch of the Maestros del Ron Cubano. From the dedication of the Maestros comes
one of the highest expressions of the Cuban Rum tradition.
This rum is produced from sugar cane grown in the Oriente province of Cuba in the South East of the island. Ron Santiago de Cuba is a molasses based rum. Following fermentation and distillation the resulting spirit is charcoal filtered before being transferred to high quality white oak barrels for ageing entirely in Cuba‘s tropical climate.
TASTING NOTES
The mouthfeel was silky, quite smooth and easy, tasting of cinnamon, aromatic tobacco, a bit of coffee. Then came citrus, nuts, some very faint fruits – raisins again, ripe red grapes, kiwi fruits, sapodilla, yellow mangoes – that was impressive, sure, it’s just that one had to reach and strain and really pay attention to tease out those notes…which may be defeating the purpose of a leisurely dram sipped as the sun goes down somewhere tropical. Unsurprisingly the finish failed (for me at any rate – your mileage may, of course, vary): it puffed some leather and light fruits and cherries, added a hint of cocoa and vanilla, and then it was over. -The Lone Caner
