Black Tot Master Blenders Reserve 2021 Rum

, ,

The Black Tot Master Blenders Reserve 2021 Rum is a limited edition that celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the last rum ration given to Australian Navy sailors when serving on British ships and with a Beenleigh component in the 2021 blend, it is sure to impress!

Black Tot took some of last year’s Black Tot 50th Anniversary Rum blend as the base, re-casking it into ex-sherry butts and barrels, to which was added layers of fruit-driven flavours using different styles of rum, aged between 9 and 24 years, from Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica and Australia (a 14 Year Post Still component from Australia’s very own Beenleigh Distillery), as well as incorporating some of the original British Royal Navy rum blend itself. Black Tot hope this rum brings people together, just as the original did 100 years ago.

The British Navy were the original rum blenders, marrying together flavours from around the world to create something served to every sailor, every day. This bottling, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Black Tot Day, is a tribute to their original blend, bringing together some of the great lost rums of the past with the amazing modern distillates of today. Every cask used has played its part in making a rum that Black Tot believe people will want to drink every day.’’ – Oliver Chilton, Head Blender

Master Blender’s Reserve takes inspiration from the Royal Navy tradition of perpetual blending. For 2021, we have aimed to find a tropical citrus quality that we hope people will be able to share with friends and loved ones around the world.’’
– Oliver Chilton, Head Blender

The composition of this 2021 limited release is a blend of rums from Guyana, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad, Australia (Beenleigh), Black Tot 50th Anniversary Rum and the Royal Navy world blend. The resulting blend has all the depth and richness we’ve come to expect with an added layer of citrus peel and tropical fruit.

Black Tot Master Blenders Reserve 2021 Rum is a limited edition that celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the last rum ration given to Australian Navy sailors when serving on British ships.

Ever since the original release of Black Tot Last Consignment, with the finite resources of the Navy Rum blend ebbing away forever, Sukhinder Singh and head blender for Elixir Distillers, Oliver Chilton, began discussing what the Navy Rum blend would look like if it were created again today. Over the course of the next 10 years, many discussions and trials were put in place for how the blend could be recreated, or evolved.

And so it was decided a new blend would be created. While honouring time old components of the original Navy Rum, it seemed a fools errand to imitate a blend profile that was crafted over the span of more than 100 years. Instead the focus became to make a blend more catered for the modern palate – and there were many different considerations at play. While the Navy had shied away from Jamaican rum, Sukhinder and Oliver knew that Jamaica would play a pivotal role in adding funk and complexity needed for a new blend. Guyana has always been an integral heart of the tot, and would remain so now. And for the tropical fruit notes, it was decided Barbados rum brought this quality like no other. And so, over the course of two years, 26 different blends were trialled and tasted, until finally the Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum was born.

Black Tot Master Blenders Reserve 2021 Rum was released in 2021 with a limited allocation making its way to Australia.
