Black Tot Master Blenders Reserve 2022 Rum

, , , ,

The Black Tot Master Blenders Reserve 2022 Rum is a limited edition that marks the third iteration of Black Tot’s flagship annual Master Blender’s Reserve release.

Black Tot Master Blender’s Reserve is inspired by the philosophy or Royal Navy rum blending. The 2022 release, like its 2021 predecessor, displays a wonderful range of origins – from Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados and our ‘perpetual blend’ element of last year’s 2021 release (finished in Sherry casks) and some original British Royal Navy rum.

NOSE: Melted chocolate nibs and toasted hazelnuts are offset against warm orange and cinnamon sticks with a background of mixed tropical juice and cassis. Blackcurrant and raspberry leaf start to come to the fore with time in the glass.

PALATE: Initial flavours of milk chocolate and raisins are complimented with café latte and ripe banana. A touch of aniseed balances against a light hint of tropical fruit and a wonderful rich baked Demerara sugar top to a crème caramel.

FINISH: Cinnamon and nutmeg spice along with chilli and cocoa linger for an age.

Black Tot Master Blenders Reserve 2022 Rum is a limited edition that marks the third iteration of Black Tot’s flagship annual Master Blender’s Reserve release.

For this year’s blend, Black Tot drew inspiration from historical rums in their collection and the unique flavour profiles they exhibited over half a century ago. These rums, since lost in the rum world, were rich with notes of baked banana, dusty chocolate, mocha milkshakes, honey, tobacco, leather, liquorice, and spice. These flavours were mapped out and became our guide.

Black Tot’s master blender began as always with rum drawn from our perpetual blend – their Master Blender’s Reserve from last year, which has been ageing in Sherry casks since last Black Tot Day.

Casks were then selected from Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad, that showcased the elements needed to recreate these traditional flavour profiles.

These four unique country blends were then brought together and married with our perpetual reserve and some original British Royal Navy rum, layered and perfectly balanced to bring you Master Blender’s Reserve 2022.

Black Tot Master Blenders Reserve 2022 continues to impress, with a limited allocation making its way to Australia.

Ever since the original release of Last Consignment Royal Navy Rum, with the finite resources of the Navy Rum blend ebbing away forever, Sukhinder Singh and head blender for Elixir Distillers, Oliver Chilton, began discussing what the Navy Rum blend would look like if it were created again today. Over the course of the next 10 years, many discussions and trials were put in place for how the blend could be recreated, or evolved.

And so it was decided a new blend would be created. While honouring time old components of the original Navy Rum, it seemed a fools errand to imitate a blend profile that was crafted over the span of more than 100 years. Instead the focus became to make a blend more catered for the modern palate – and there were many different considerations at play. While the Navy had shied away from Jamaican rum, Sukhinder and Oliver knew that Jamaica would play a pivotal role in adding funk and complexity needed for a new blend. Guyana has always been an integral heart of the tot, and would remain so now. And for the tropical fruit notes, it was decided Barbados rum brought this quality like no other. And so, over the course of two years, 26 different blends were trialled and tasted, until finally Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum was born.

And where to now? Well, 2020 was the year of the 50th Anniversary for Black Tot Day, and we released a delicious limited edition blend – Black Tot 50th Anniversary Rum – to celebrate this. And in the journey to come, our aim to is continue to evolve and develop new blends, just as the Navy used to do. Each year, we will be releasing a limited edition blend to celebrate Black Tot Day and the legacy of the Navy blenders.
