Papalin 7 Year Jamaica Navy Proof Rum

Papalin 7 Year Jamaica Navy Proof Rum is the latest limited release as part of the renowned Papalin Project by Velier.

The idea is based on our desire to go back in the history of rum to the late 1800s, when Jamaican traders began to make blends, i.e., mixtures of rums from different distilleries. Take Myers’s and John Wray Nephew: in addition to selling rum casks and exporting them to Europe, they also produced their own blends – never specifying the distilleries of origin. Then, over the last seventy years, we’ve seen an increasing number of brands of European-produced blends like for example Negrita, with mixtures made by European blenders. Then in the seventies individual distilleries began selling their own products, and as a result tropical blends have slowly and gradually disappeared. In light of all these changes, the goal of the Papalin project is to bring back the ancient tradition of rum blends.

What is the idea behind the project?
The basic idea is to blend rums made in a single island and entirely produced and aged at the respective distilleries. Our first release focuses on Jamaica and is called Papalin Jamaica. In the old days – that is, the days of Myers’s and John Wray Nephew – labels did not specify the distilleries of origin, in fact the composition of the blends was kept completely secret. But I have no secrets, so although I’m following the original tradition of not indicating the distilleries of origin on labels, I can openly say my first blend was made from Hampden and Worthy Park rums, both aged at least 7 years. Of course, the secret I do keep is the ratio of the different rums I use.

Tasting notes:

The nose is lively yet refined. Notes of vanilla, candied citrus fruit, nutmet, coffee and chamomile. On the palate the rum is rich and powerful. Cane sugar, salted caramel butter, pear, geranium and vegetal notes. The finish is long and rich with dandelion, lemon, vanilla, menthol, mineral and cocoa powder.

Presentation box included.

Papalin 7 Year Jamaica Navy Proof Rum is a limited release reduced to 57.18% abv, as a tribute to the historical strength of the blends made for the Brisith Royal Navy. The alcohol level of 57.1% ABV is known as ‘proof’, the strength at which gunpowder will still ignite if mixed with the spirit: an ancient way to measure and understand the strength at which rum was bottled for centuries!

Papalin is a project dedicated to rum blends, made by Luca Gargano himself. After the success of the first edition launched by Velier in October 2013 (now a collectors’ item), the brand has been revived with two new releases: Papalin Jamaica 7 years old and Papalin Jamaica 7 years old Navy Proof.

Jamaica is the latest area of research and selection by Velier and these two new Papaplin rums represent a new horizon of blending tropically aged pot still rums. They are ‘vatted rums’ (blend of different pot stills) entirely aged in the respective warehouses of the distilleries where they were produced: Worthy Park and Hampden Estate.

The reason Papalin is called a “tropical dependent bottler” is that Velier is the only company that created direct partnerships with distilleries when it comes to sourcing and ageing rums, and therefore depends on the distilleries until the product is bottled. This way, all the projects are planned hand in hand with partners in terms of sourcing and ageing, which always takes place in the official warehouses of the distilleries.
