Plantation Grenada 2004 Vintage Rum

, , ,

Plantation Grenada 2004 Vintage Rum was aged for eight years in casks of unspecified origin. A slightly dusty top note gradually dissipates to reveal subdued aromas of clove, cantaloupe and citrus oils that build with time in the glass. A luscious, rich, round entry fills the mouth, delivering honey, creme caramel and fried banana flavours with a touch of spice. Exceptionally pure, soft, silky mouth feel and perfectly poised, this rum is almost Sauternes like in profile, finishing sweet with a long, creamy, dried banana, creme caramel aftertaste.

Grenada is considered one of the most fertile of the Caribbean islands, where plantations of sugar cane adjoin fruit and spice growers, the latter of which have earned its world famous reputation as the ‘Island of Spice’.

This is a rare old vintage bottling (old label) now becoming extremely hard to find (we have just 1 bottle available).

Plantation Grenada 2004 Vintage Rum like all Plantation rums are first aged in the Caribbean, in its hot and humid climate, generally in young bourbon casks. When they reach  a desired age, they are shipped to Maison Ferrand’s Château de Bonbonnet at cask strength in order to preserve their richness of aroma and flavor.

There, they are finished by Maison Ferrand in their ‘traditional style’ for several months to a year in cognac casks in order to give them more roundness. Many of the Plantation rum range also have sugar additives (called ‘dosage’ by some French producers) in order to create the sweeter rums that Plantation are best known for and popularly used by bartenders for mixing cocktails and tiki drinks.

The Plantation Grenada 2004 Vintage Rum is part of the aged Vintages range. Plantation Vintages are an invitation to travel. From Jamaica to Barbados via Panama, each rum possesses characteristic local flavors from each country included in Maison Ferrand’s portfolio.

In 1989 Alexander Gabriel discovers Maison Ferrand, one of the oldest spirit brands in the Cognac region. The reputation of the House is indisputable but sales are lagging. An immediate crush grabs hold and Alexandre Gabriel dives in with exuberance to the details and craft of Cognac production.

Travel follows passion and soon Alexandre Gabriel is creating a dedicated distribution network of equally passionate partners. He builds on his values and vision for the House. Twenty years later, most of his founding team are still together.

The 1990s see Alexandre Gabriel combing the Caribbean in search of the best rums of the region. Plantation is born: an artisanal range of rums from the great terroirs of the tropics.

Plantation is also owner of the West Indies Rum Distillery (WIRD) in Barbados and is a shareholder of National Rum of Jamaica, owner of Clarendon Distillery and Long Pond Distillery. These investments in the production of rum enabled Plantation to secure the supply of these two major terroirs.
