Velier Beenleigh 10 Year 2013 Australian Rum is an extremely limited edition from Beenleigh in collaboration with Velier.
In 1865 a duo from England by the names of John Davy and Francis Gooding purchased 300 acres of land fronting the Albert River. They named the clearing after their old Devonshire farm, which was called Beenleigh. Originally, they had intended to grow cotton on this land, but as fate would have it, a more lucrative alternative presented itself- sugar cane.
As legend would have it, around the same time, a man called James Stewart, known as ‘The Bosun’ was operating a floating sugar mill, aboard the S.S. Walrus, along the Albert and Logan Rivers. He soon found a productive use for the excess molasses he produced- making Rum on the sly. One day in 1884 the SS Walrus washed ashore on our banks. No-one was aboard- except The Bosun’s Copper Pot still. Beenleigh Artisan Distillery was born!
Celebrating 138 years of Australian rum provenance, crafting the Real Australian Spirit since 1884 — the award-winning, heritage-listed Beenleigh Distillery stand the test of time on the banks of the Albert River in Queensland Australia. Beenleigh is the oldest distillery in Australia still in operation. It produces rum from molasses selected exclusively from family-run farms across the country. The rum is distilled in a double-distillation vat still. The spirit is then aged in casks previously used for Australian brandy, creating a traditional rum with a very fruity and unique style that immediately differs from its Caribbean cousins on the first nose.
Having imported and distributed rum from this historic distillery since 2021, Velier and La Maison du Whisky first selected two batches from different years, this Velier Beenleigh 5 Year 2015 Australian Rum and a 15 year old from 2006, both distilled first in a column still, then re-distilled in a pot still before being aged in a tropical climate. This latest release a 10 Year from 2013, aged in QLD.
